MassachusettsThe population of Massachusetts is estimated to be 6,398,743 (in the year 2005) with 3,359,552 estimated to be a part of the labor force. The median household income is $55,658 with a per capita income of $30,285; one of the highest in the US. Massachusetts is bordered on the north by New Hampshire and Vermont, on the west by New York, on the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Massachusetts is known as the Bay State because of the several large bays that give its coastline its distinctive shape. Its agricultural outputs are seafood, nursery stock, dairy products, cranberries, and vegetables. Its most important industrial outputs are machinery, electronic equipment, scientific instruments, printing, and publishing. Massachusetts is the second largest cranberry producing state in the union. Other sectors vital to the Massachusetts economy include higher education, health care, financial services and tourism. By land, sea, or air, Massachusetts has an extensive shipping, distribution and transportation infrastructure. Massport, the Massachusetts Port Authority, develops, promotes, and manages airports and the seaport and transportation infrastructure to enable Massachusetts and New England to compete successfully in a global marketplace (www.mass.gov).
