Capital Gains Taxes
The rate of tax paid on capital gains from shareholding is different based upon whether or not the shareholding is qualified. For non-qualified shareholding in a company, the rate on capital gains is 12.5%. For individuals having qualified shareholding the normal progressive tax rate is paid on 40% of the capital gain.

For the purpose of calculating a capital gain, the gain is decreased in line with the rate of increase in inflation, from the date of purchase to the date of sale. In regards to capital gains in a corporation, identical relief is allowed at the rate of increase in the Index.

There is a tax rate of 27%, instead of the normal 12.5%, if the sale of a holding is in a real estate company and one of the following conditions are met:

  • A company traded on the Stock Exchange - sale of more than 2% of the capital conferring voting rights or more than 5% of the issued share capital
  • A company that is not traded on the Stock Exchange - sale of more than 20% of the voting rights or 25% of the issued share capital
